Rock News

Dear Friends:

Here’s your Rock news for the week:

  1. THIS SUNDAY:  As we get closer to a new facility and a new chapter in the history of the Rock, it is a good time to stop and give thanks for all of God’s blessings.  The first meeting to talk about a new church in Seward (which eventually became the Rock) happened ten years ago.  What has happened in your life over the last 10 years?  Looking back, can you see God’s hand in the good times and the bad?  What stories do you have to tell your children and family?  Join us this Sunday for week 1 of “Remember and Give Thanks.”  We’ll take some time to remember and give thanks for God’s goodness to the Rock and to all of us over the last 10 years.  Want to get a jump start?  Read Joshua 4.
  2. GOING DEEPER:  Don’t forget your chance to dig a little deeper on Sunday mornings.  Come to the Lied Senior Center a little early (at 8:45 a.m.) to participate in a new video-based discussion called, “The Bible On Trial:  Beyond A Reasonable Doubt.”
  3. NATIONAL YOUTH GATHERING:  The LCMS National Youth Gathering is next summer in New Orleans from July 16-20.  There will be an informational meeting for youth and their parents this coming Wednesday, August 19 at 7pm at the Seward Civic Center to learn more about the gathering and to talk about sending a group from the Rock.  If you’re not sure if you are interested, come to learn more.  To learn more about the gathering, check out the information on this web site:  www.lcmsgathering.com.
  4. ACCESS THE ROCK: Do you want to know more about what the Rock is all about and what we teach and believe?  Are you interested in finding out what it means to a member of the Rock?  Plan to join us for the next Access the Rock time from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 pm on Sunday, August 23.  We’ll meet right at the Lied Senior Center and pizza and drinks will be provided.  If you have questions or if you would like to attend, please respond to this email or talk to Pastor Mike on Sunday or message Pastor Mike on the Rock’s facebook page.
  5. WORK NIGHT WEDNESDAY!  There is still lots to do.  Please head over to the new Rock at 237 S. 3rd to help out.  Work time usually runs from 5pm to 8pm or so.
  6. CHAIR-IT-ABLE CONTRIBUTIONS.  We need 66 chairs to finish up and have 300 chairs for the new Rock.  For only $50 (that’s the same amount you would pay to buy 50 cups of coffee or about 3 lattes at Starbucks), you can help the poor and the tired and the seatless find a good place to sit at the new Rock.  Thanks to all those who have already been so generous.  If you haven’t given already, please help get us over the top.
  7. WOMEN OF FAITH.  This year’s Women of Faith conference is August 28-29 at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.  We currently have 30 women signed up to go (praise God!).  There are a few tickets left at the price of $84.45 to sit in the lower section with the group from the Rock.   If you are interested please contact Sue Briggs at 402-430-9158 or [email protected].  This is the farewell tour after 20 years so don’t miss out!  Want to know more about the conference?  Click here:  http://www.womenoffaith.com/events2/lincoln/.
  8. FAMILY PICNIC ON SEPTEMBER 9:  Everyone (including families from Stepping Stones, Faith Ink, and Godparents) is invited to join us at Plum Creek Park on the West Side by the Tennis Courts for a picnic to kick off Wednesday night activities this fall.  Sloppy Joes and table service will be provided.  Each family is asked to bring a side dish to share and their own beverages. Families may want to bring lawn chairs and blankets too.  (In the event of rain, we will meet Sunday, Sept. 13th). Also, don’t forget to check out the web site (www.therockseward.org) for more information about Stepping Stones, Faith Ink, Godparents and how you can register.
  9. BLUE VALLEY PANTRY:   GRAB SOME CANNED FRUIT!!! For real, the Pantry is running low on canned fruit and needs to be restocked.  Grab some cans and drop them off at the Rock this Sunday.

Blessings on your weekend.

Rock News

Dear Friends:

Since I bombarded you with emails last week, I held off a little with the Rock news. Here’s the news for this week and last week:

  1. LAST SUNDAY & THIS SUNDAY: We finished up with Week 5 of Joining Jesus yesterday. We learned how to connect to people through prayer. Don’t forget to pray over the prayer request you took home with you on Sunday. Also, keep working on working prayer into your relationships. If someone shares a concern or a joy, ask if you can pray for them or (better yet) ask if you can pray with them right there! If you didn’t pick up a copy of “Joining Jesus in His Mission” by Greg Finke when they were available at the Rock and would like a copy, reply to this email. This coming Sunday, Dr. Thad Warren will be leading our gathering an encouraging us to Light’n Up. If you want to get a jump start, read Matthew 5: 13-16 this week.
  2. WEB SITE. If you haven’t already done so, check out the updated web site for the Rock: www.therockseward.org. Also, if you don’t follow the Rock on facebook, click on the facebook symbol in the top right corner of the home page on the web site and you’ll jump right to facebook.
  3. PAINTING THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT. Please come and help paint at the new Rock (237 S. 2nd) this Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm or so.
  4. CHAIR-IT-ABLE CONTRIBUTIONS. 222 chairs so far!! We’re getting really close! Only 78 more to go to get to 300. Let’s finish strong!
  5. NEED LEADERS. We need a few more leaders to fill out the Board of Directors and the Ambassadors. Would you be interested in sharing your talents with the Rock in this way? If you are interested or if you have questions, please respond to this email.
  6. ANNUAL MEETING: Thanks to all who attended the annual meeting this past Sunday afternoon. We approved the updated constitution and bylaws, approved an operational and campaign plan for 2015-16, approved moving forward with a comfort dog, adopted a budget and ate lots of ice cream. Also, Dave Kumm reported on renovation progress at the new Rock. The latest information from the contractor indicates that their work will be done by around the end of August!
  7. COME BE PART OF THE ACTION! You are invited! Please join the Thrivent Board on Thursday, July 30, at 6:00 pm, in the Seward Memorial Library. We need your help to assemble hygiene kits and layettes for Orphan Grain Train. We will be utilizing a Thrivent Action Team and you can join the fun! While assembling the kits, you will discover how simple it is to form an Action Team of your own–and take home some ideas for Action Teams and how to start one. The Thrivent Board is accepting donations of the following items for the kits. Hygiene Kit: bath towel, washcloth, bath-size bar of soap, adult-sized toothbrush, comb, deodorant stick. Layette: diapers, baby wipes, pacifier (new), bottle (new), sleeper, onesie, blanket, receiving blanket. The blankets and clothing may be new or gently used—but must be clean. Everyone is invited—and you do not need to be a Thrivent member to participate! Questions? Contact Gary or Erika Rolf, the Thrivent Congregational Advocates for the Rock. Also, Gary is a Thrivent Board member.
  8. ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE. Please help Blue Valley Community Action in Seward County provide school supplies to area children in need. The Seward County League of Women Voters will hold a Fill-the-Backpack event in conjunction with Blue Valley ON Saturday, July 25 from 11 am to 1 pm in the basement of the Civic Center. Bring a donation of K-12 school supplies and hear from a Blue Valley staff member about the many important services Blue Valley Community Action provides to families in Seward County. For more information contact SCLWW President Ellen Beck at 402-646-9112.
  9. BLUE VALLEY PANTRY: July is canned meat month except for tuna (sorry Charlie). Grab some spam (or other meat variety) and drop it off at the Rock any time this month.

Blessings on your weekend.

Rock News

Dear Friends:

Here’s your Rock news for the week:

  1. THIS SUNDAY:  We’re going through 5 simple practices you can do every day and everywhere to help connect people to Jesus.  Week 1 was “Seeking the Kingdom” (looking for a place where a little grace or a little truth can be applied).  Week 2 was “Hearing from Jesus” (getting into Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the Bible to watch what Jesus did and hear what He said).  Week 3 was “Talking to People” (creating agenda-less friendships with people around you).  Join us at 10am at the Lied Senior Center this Sunday for Week 4 and “Doing Good.”  Come casual, bring a friend and grab some coffee or cookies or your way in.

Also, don’t forget to pick up a copy of the book, Joining Jesus on His Mission, by Greg Finke.  They will be available on Sunday.  Want to know more about Greg Finke and Dwelling 1:14?  Click here:  http://www.dwelling114.org/.

  2. ROCKING THE BLOGOSPHERE.  Check out the updated web site (www.therockseward.org) and read Pastor Mike’s blog.  It’s under the “NEWS” tab on the home page.
  3. WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS WORK NIGHT AT THE NEW ROCK.  There are lots of things to do at the new Rock.  For the next few weeks, Wednesday nights from 5pm to 8pmor so will be work nights at the new Rock (237 S. 2nd Street).  This Wednesday will be more painting so please come and help if you can.  Big thanks to all those who have been helping.  Also, if you have time on a weekend to do some work, check in with Dave Kumm ([email protected]) and he can help you coordinate or be part of a work group.
  4. CHAIR-IT-ABLE CONTRIBUTIONS.  157 chairs so far!!  We’ve blown past the half-way mark and are making steady progress toward the goal of 300.  As you will note on the chair progress chart at the Rock, we’ve taken care of the chairs in the front first so the prime chairs in the back are now available for only $50 each!  Let’s finish strong so there are plenty of seats in the back!  Thanks to all who have contributed so far.  God is good.
  5. NEED LEADERS.   We need a few more leaders to fill out the Board of Directors and the Ambassadors.  Would you be interested in sharing your talents with the Rock in this way? If you are interested or if you have questions, please respond to this email or see me at church this Sunday.
  6. ICE CREAM AND ANNUAL MEETING:  We will hold our annual voter’s meeting and ice cream social at 1:30 pm in the Seward Civic Center basement on Sunday, July 19.  Bring the kids for ice cream – child care will be available.  We’ll start out with ice cream and tons of toppings, then take time to adopt updated bylaws (and eat ice cream), adopt a budget and elect leaders (and eat ice cream), review that status of our new facilities, review and approve an operational plan for the upcoming year (and eat ice cream) and consider applying for a comfort dog for the Rock (who has to eat dog food and not ice cream).   Please watch your email over the next several days as I will be sending multiple emails with the meeting agenda and materials you can review in advance.  Oh, and did I mention there would be ice cream? NOTE:  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend and participate, but only voting members of the Rock can vote.  If you aren’t a voting member and want to be, or if you aren’t sure if you are a voting member, contact Bill Schranz ([email protected]) ASAP.
  7. BLUE VALLEY PANTRY:   July is canned meat month except for tuna (sorry Charlie).  Grab some spam (or other meat variety) and drop it off at the Rockany time this month.

Blessings on your weekend.

Rock News

Dear Friends:

Here’s some Rock news for the week:

  1. THIS SUNDAY:  Join us this Sunday at 10am at the Lied Senior Center for Week 2 of Joining Jesus on His Mission.  Last Sunday we looked at seeking Jesus where He is working.  This week we’ll examine how we hear form Jesus.  Does He still talk to us and how do we hear what He is saying?  Come relax and learn with us this week.  Also, don’t forget to pick up a copy of the book, Joining Jesus on His Mission, by Greg Finke.  They will be available on Sunday.
  2. NEW WEBSITE!  Check out the updated web site for the Rock (www.therockseward.org).  It has a great new look and lots of information with more to come.  Big thanks to Megan and Seth Boggs for all their work getting it set up!
  3. FIREWORKS:  We have an opportunity to help a little with two fireworks stands this year.  For anyone who would like to help, the stand at Pac N Save and the stand at Fast Mart need some help selling fireworks in the afternoon/evening on July 3 and all day on July 4.  This is a great opportunity for youth planning to attend the National Youth Gathering next summer to earn some funds to help fund the trip.  Interested?  Respond to this email or sign up to help at the Rock this Sunday.
  4. ANNUAL VOTER’S MEETING:  Mark your calendars for July 19.  We will have our annual voter’s meeting in the afternoon on that day.  We’ll elect leaders, adopt a budget and consider a number of other items.  Please plan to attend.  Everyone is welcome to attend, but only voting members of the Rock can vote.  If you aren’t a voting member and want to be, or if you aren’t sure if you are a voting member, contact Bill Schranz ([email protected]) and he can help get you set up.
  5. CHAIR-IT-ABLE CONTRIBUTIONS.  We’re making great progress on funding chairs for the worship area at the new Rock.  If you haven’t participated yet, please consider doing so.
  6. BLUE VALLEY PANTRY:   One more week for Pancake Mix (the pantry prefers the “just add water” kind).  July is canned meat month!

Blessings on your weekend.

Rock News

Dear Friends:

Here’s a bunch of Rock news for the week:

  1. THIS SUNDAY:  Dr. Christianstein is safely back in his home country so it’s time for a new series.  But before we go whole hog (or whole mountain goat) into something new, this Sunday will be a stand-alone Sunday focused on “Speaking of Jesus.”  Want to get a jump start?  Read the story of Jesus and Nicodemus in John 3.  We’ll gather at 10:00 a.m. at the Lied Senior Center, but you can also come early at 8:45 a.m. for some bible study time with Pastor Mike.  The group is currently working through some video bible study sessions.
  2. NEWTON FAMILY BENEFIT ON THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 14:  Plan to stop by the Sparetime Lounge in Seward from 11 am to 2pm on THIS SUNDAY to help the Newton family.  Sparetime will be serving a Pulled Pork Sandwich & Sides and there will be free will donations, items available for a Silent Auction and more.  It’s all to help the Newton family deal with medical bills and transportation costs.  Before he turned 1 year old, CJ Newton, son of Chris & Cosi Newton, was diagnosed with Craniosynistosis, a premature closure of the sutures of the head. When CJ was 9 months old his skull bones were completely closed but his brain wasn’t done growing. In April 2015 CJ had a Frontal Distraction procedure at Children’s Hospital. A second surgery is scheduled for July 9th at Children’s Hospital. They are not sure if any further procedures will need to be done since he has again been experiencing headaches. He is currently being treated for migraines and we pray that this will help alleviate the pain he is feeling.  If you have questions or would like to help, contact Denny Erks at 402-641-4993 or stop by Sparetime and speak with Cosi.
  3. LCEF:  Don’t forget, you can help the Lutheran Church Extension Fund (“LCEF”) and the Rock at the same time!  Sign up for a new account for you or your kids or your grandkids and the Rock gets a rebate on its interest on our building loan.  Information on how to sign up is available at the info table at the Rock and here:  www.lcef.org.  A young investor steward account can be opened with $25 and the interest rates are great.  Thanks again to Paul Petit and Gene Gierke, our local LCEF representatives, for being with us at the Rock last week.
  4. VOTER’S MEETING:  Thanks to all who stayed for the voter’s meeting last Sunday.  A 5% increase in the construction budget from $785,000 to $825,000 was approved.  NOTE: Our next voter’s meeting will be our annual meeting on July 19, 2015.  At that time we’ll do all kinds of stuff including, electing leaders, adopting the annual budget, reviewing updated bylaws, considering moving forward with a comfort dog.
  5. IT’S (ALMOST) TIME TO PAINT AT THE NEW ROCK:  Thanks to everyone who signed up to paint this week.  Unfortunately, some contractor work didn’t get finished up in time so the painting session has been delayed to next Saturday, June 20.  If you are available to help on that day starting in the morning (probably around 9am), please respond to this email or sign up at the Rock or contact Dave Kumm.
  6. CHAIR-IT-ABLE CONTRIBUTIONS.  Praise God!  We’ve raised enough for 86 chairs!  That’s 28.666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666% of our goal of 300.  I can’t stand repeating decimals.  They just don’t sit well with me so please help us move that number up to a nice even 100%.   Thanks!
  7. BLUE VALLEY PANTRY:   Pancake Mix (the pantry prefers the “just add water” kind).
  8. NEBRASKA DISTRICT CONVENTION:  The Nebraska District of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod is holding its convention this Friday and Saturday(June 12-13).  Churches and schools from all over Nebraska will be sending representatives to Kearney to gather for worship, elect leaders and make important decisions regarding how the LCMS will help spread the Gospel in Nebraska.  Pastor Mike and I will be attending on behalf of the Rock and Pastor Mike and Pastor Scott Bruick from St. John Lutheran in Seward will be serving as chaplains for the event.  Please pray that God’s Hand of guidance would be upon all the delegates and the event.

Blessings on your weekend.

Rock News

Dear Friends:

Here’s your Rock news for the week

  1. THIS SUNDAY:  Quite a while ago, we did a series for a few Sundays called Weird Science.  Pastor Mike did some science experiments and we learned some cool things about God in the process.  Can it get any weirder than doing science experiments right in the middle of a church service?  Yes, I think it can.  Grab the whole family and your safety goggles and join us this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at the Lied Senior Center for Week 1 of Weirder Science!
  2. COME EARLY/STAY AFTER THIS SUNDAY FOR EDDIE THE COMFORT DOG!  Eddie the Comfort Dog, along with some of his handlers, will be at The Rock THIS SUNDAY.  They will be available before worship to interact with people and then, after worship, will be available for an informal question-answer-info time.  We are getting close to having everything lined up to make a decision on how the Rock could move forward with a comfort dog.  This is a great opportunity to find out more about how God is using Eddie to connect people to Jesus.    Click here to learn more about Eddie:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKTrADi2QfY.
  3. BLUE VALLEY PANTRY:  April showers bring May flowers.  What do May flowers bring?  Pilgrims (and hay fever).  Grab some Kleenex for the pantry any time this month.
  4. THE NEW ROCK:  Work continues at the new Rock.  Thanks to everyone who has been helping.  Watch for more opportunities to help in the near future.
  5. HOW CAN YOU SERVE?  Activities slow down at the Rock some for the summer, but now is the time we need to line up people to do all kinds of things.  In July, we’ll elect new officers and directors and ambassadors.  This fall, we’ll need Godparent leaders and help with Stepping Stones and Faith Ink and other things.  Take some time now to pray and consider whether it’s the right time for you to step into one of these roles.  Questions?  Respond to this email, talk to Pastor Mike or talk to any of the leaders at the Rock.

Blessings on your weekend.

Dear Friends:

Here’s a little Rock news…

  1. THIS SUNDAY:  It’s a good thing I’m so humble, because I’m a really a pretty big deal.  Join us this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at the Lied Senior Center for the last week of Liar Liar.  The world is always telling you it’s all about you, but is it really?  We’ll see what God’s Word has to say about the subject.  Grab your mom (she really is a big deal) and the whole family and join us at the Rock this week.
  2. COMFORT DOG:   On Sunday, May 17, Eddie the Comfort Dog, along with some of his handlers, will be at The Rock.  They will be available before worship to interact with people and then, after worship, will be available for an informal question-answer-info time.  We are getting close to having everything lined up to make a decision on how the Rock could move forward with a comfort dog.  This is a great opportunity to find out more about what comfort dogs do and to get to meet a comfort dog in person (in dog?).  If there are some questions you already have, it would be great to submit them now so we can ask the handlers to be ready with answers.  You can email your questions to me or to Pastor Mike ([email protected]) or write them on a slip of paper and drop them in a questions box this Sunday.
  3. BLUE VALLEY PANTRY:  If thinking of your sweet mother and all she’s done for you brings a tear to your eye, bring some facial tissue to the Rock this Sunday or any Sunday this month.
  4. THE NEW ROCK:  Work continues at the new Rock.  Thanks to everyone who has been helping.  Watch for more opportunities to help in the near future.

Blessings on your weekend.

STAY FOR LUNCH THIS WEEK!  Please plan to stay for lunch after our gathering tomorrow.  It will be great time of fellowship and we’ll have the opportunity to say thanks and ask God’s blessings on our DCE interns as they complete the semester and their work among us.  If you can, please bring a salad or a dessert to share (or don’t and join us anyway).  Everything else will be provided.  Need some inspiration?  Click here for some Lutheran dessert ideas.
  3. BLUE VALLEY PANTRY.  Tomorrow is the last Sunday for paper towels.  May is Kleenex month for the pantry.
  4. THE NEW ROCK.  Work continues at the new Rock.  A lot of the demolition work is completed and studs are going up for some of the new doors, walls and bathrooms.  Right now, we need help with a couple things:
    1. There is some plaster on the walls in the new fellowship area.  We are thinking it may look nice to remove the plaster and have some exposed brick in that area.  We need volunteers to help chip plaster off the brick.  That needs to happen in the next few days.  If you are interested, please respond to this email right away.
    2. On this Thursday evening (April 30), we need help unloading boxes that are being delivered to the new Rock.  After removing the existing carpet on the 3rd floor, it was determined that it would be best to cover the floor again.  Thankfully, we have been able to obtain carpet squares that will work well and that are inexpensive.  A first load of squares is being delivered Thursday evening and the boxes need to be moved into a storage area at the new Rock.  If you can help, please respond to this email.  THANKS!

Blessings on your weekend.
